Gas Safe engineer cleaning a Giannoni-style heat exchanger with a specialized tool in a workshop.

How to Clean a Giannoni-Style Heat Exchanger (Gas Boilers Only)

For Gas Safe Engineers Only

This guide is intended for Gas Safe registered engineers performing maintenance on Giannoni-style heat exchangers in gas boilers.
Cleaning these correctly helps maintain efficiency, prevent blockages, and extend the life of the boiler.

Never attempt this work without the proper qualification — internal boiler cleaning is not suitable for DIY.

Tools and Supplies Needed

  • Fernox cleaner (diluted in water)
  • Spray bottle
  • Viessmann heat exchanger tool (or suitable brush)
  • Clean cloth
  • PPE (gloves, eye protection)
  • Access to clean running water

Step-by-Step Cleaning Procedure

1. Isolate the Boiler and Remove the Burner Door

Turn off power and gas to the boiler.
Remove the burner door carefully to gain access to the inside of the heat exchanger.

2. Remove Insulation Pads

Lift out any insulation pads from the rear of the chamber to prevent soaking or damage during cleaning.

3. Spray and Rinse with Cleaner

Fill a spray bottle with water mixed with a small amount of Fernox cleaner.
Generously soak the inside of the heat exchanger to loosen soot and scale.

4. Clean Between the Fins

Use the heat exchanger tool or brush to clean between fins thoroughly.
This removes debris and ensures proper airflow and condensate drainage.

5. Wipe Down

Wipe all accessible surfaces with a clean cloth.
The goal is not to make the exchanger spotless, but to remove blockages and restore normal performance.

6. Final Rinse and Reassemble

Rinse the area again with clean water to flush away residue.
Refit the insulation pads and burner door securely.

7. Don’t Forget the Condense Trap

Always clean the condense trap — it often collects soot and debris after flushing the exchanger.

Important Safety Reminder

Only Gas Safe registered engineers are legally permitted to perform internal cleaning and servicing of gas boilers in the UK.
Incorrect handling of combustion components can cause serious safety risks or system damage.
