Ideal Logic Combi Boiler Fault Codes Explained (L1, L2, F1 & More)

Understanding Ideal Logic Boiler Fault Codes

Is your Ideal Logic Combi boiler showing an error like L1, L2, or F1? Don’t panic — these are among the most common fault codes engineers encounter.
At Certificates4UK Ltd, we repair and maintain Ideal boilers across Molesey, Surrey, and London, ensuring every system runs safely and efficiently.

The Most Common Ideal Boiler Fault Codes

L1 – Flow Temperature Overheat

Cause: The boiler has overheated, usually due to a faulty thermistor, blocked heat exchanger, or pump issue.
What to Do: The boiler should be switched off and checked by a qualified Gas Safe engineer to prevent further overheating or damage.

L2 – Ignition Lockout

Cause: The boiler has failed to ignite. Possible causes include a faulty gas valve, spark generator, blocked condensate pipe, or ignition electrodes.
Tip: Try resetting once after confirming power is on. If the fault persists, contact a professional — repeated resets can cause further damage.

L5 – Too Many Resets

Cause: The boiler has been reset multiple times in quick succession.
Quick Fix: Turn off the boiler at the mains for 30 seconds, then switch it back on. If the code returns, an underlying fault remains.

L6 – Flame Sensing Electrode Fault

Cause: The flame signal isn’t being detected properly due to worn electrodes or loose wiring.
What to Do: Requires inspection and possible electrode replacement by a qualified engineer.

F1 – Low Water Pressure

Cause: The system pressure is below safe levels.
Fix: Refill the boiler using the filling loop until the pressure gauge reads 1.0–1.5 bar. If the issue continues, the water pressure sensor may need replacing.

F2 – Flame Loss

Cause: The boiler is losing flame mid-operation.
Watch For: Boiler lights briefly before shutting off. Causes may include gas supply issues, spark generator faults, or condensate blockages.

F3 – Fan Fault

Cause: The boiler fan isn’t running correctly or isn’t receiving the right voltage (should be around 230V AC).
What to Do: Only a Gas Safe engineer should test and replace the fan or wiring.

Why These Faults Occur

Most Ideal Logic boiler errors come from one of four areas:

  1. Low water pressure or air in the system
  2. Ignition or gas valve failure
  3. Faulty thermistors or sensors
  4. Blocked condensate pipes or fans

Regular servicing helps prevent these issues, keeping your boiler safe and energy-efficient all year round.
