Viessmann Boiler F2 Fault (Overheating): What It Means & How to Fix It

One of the most frequent issues we see with Viessmann boilers across London and Surrey is the F2 fault code. This error indicates overheating—often due to a dirty or blocked system.

At Certificates4UK Ltd, we’ve serviced dozens of Viessmann units showing this problem. Here’s a breakdown of the causes and what you can do to fix them.

 What Does F2 (Overheating) Mean?

The F2 fault is triggered when the boiler temperature rises above a safe limit—typically around 90°C—and cuts out to prevent damage.

 How to Diagnose:

• Turn on a hot tap and watch the temperature gauge on the front of the boiler.

• If the temperature rapidly rises to 90°C or higher, then cuts off, the most likely cause is a blocked plate heat exchanger.

 Cleaning the Heat Exchanger

In most cases, a blocked plate is due to sludge and debris in the system.

Solution:

• Clean the plate heat exchanger thoroughly.

• If corrosion or heavy scale is present, replacement may be necessary.

Tip: Refer to Viessmann’s technical sheet on cleaning heat exchangers or book a professional system flush with us.

 Rubber Hose Issues

Another common cause of F2 faults in Viessmann boilers is blockage in the rubber flow and return hoses.

These hoses can become clogged with system debris, especially in poorly maintained systems.

 How to Check:

Gently squeeze the rubber hoses (when cold).

• If they feel hard or crunchy, they are full of sludge.

• If hoses are discolored, it’s best to replace them.

 Cleaning Tips:

• Remove the hoses and flush them out using clean water and a flue brush.

• Accessing the rear hose requires removal of the main heat exchanger, so professional help is often advised.

 Prevent Future Overheating

To reduce the risk of recurring F2 faults:

Power flush the system to remove existing sludge.

• Install a magnetic filter to catch future debris.

• Use inhibitor chemicals to protect against corrosion.
