Balancing radiators after a new curved radiator installation to improve heating efficiency

When Do You Need to Balance Your Radiators?

Balancing radiators is often needed when some radiators in your home heat up much faster than others, or when you notice cold radiators upstairs while those downstairs are hot. This issue is usually caused by uneven water flow within the heating system.

Radiators closest to the boiler tend to receive hot water first, leaving those further away struggling to heat properly. Over time, this imbalance affects comfort, increases energy waste, and reduces overall heating efficiency. In some cases, poor circulation can also indicate the need for professional inspection through our gas, boiler, and electrical services in Surrey.

Balancing vs Bleeding Radiators – What’s the Difference?

Balancing radiators is not the same as bleeding radiators.

Bleeding removes trapped air from a single radiator that is not heating correctly. Radiator balancing, however, adjusts the flow of hot water across all radiators so they heat evenly.

Because radiator balancing affects the entire heating system, it requires a methodical approach. If uneven heating continues after bleeding, it may indicate a circulation issue or pump fault that requires professional boiler repair.

What Tools Do You Need to Balance Radiators?

Before balancing radiators, you will need:

  • Radiator bleeding key
  • Digital thermometer or multimeter with thermometer function
  • Lockshield valve adjuster or adjustable spanner
  • Paper and pen to record temperatures

If the system contains sludge or internal corrosion, balancing alone may not solve the issue. In such cases, a professional power flush may be required to restore proper flow and heating efficiency.

Step-by-Step Guide: How to Balance Your Radiators

1. Turn Off the Heating System

Switch off the heating and allow the system to cool fully.

2. Bleed All Radiators

Remove trapped air from every radiator to ensure accurate balancing.

3. Open All Radiator Valves Fully

Fully open TRVs, wheelhead valves, and lockshield valves.

4. Make a List of Your Radiators

Write down every radiator in the property.

5. Turn the Heating Back On

Note the order in which radiators heat up. Those nearest the boiler will usually warm first.

6. Turn the Heating Off Again

Allow the system to cool once more.

7. Start With the First Radiator

Turn the heating back on and begin with the radiator that heated up first.

8. Adjust the Lockshield Valve

Close the lockshield valve fully, then reopen it by a quarter turn.

9–10. Measure Pipe Temperatures

Adjust the lockshield valve until there is roughly a 12°C difference between the flow and return pipes.

11. Repeat for All Radiators

Work through each radiator in order until the system is balanced.

Why Balancing Radiators Matters

Balancing radiators can:

  • Fix the cold radiators upstairs
  • Improve radiator balancing across the home
  • Increase heating efficiency
  • Reduce strain on the boiler
  • Help lower energy bills

Persistent imbalance may indicate an ageing or inefficient boiler. In that case, it may be worth considering professional assessment or even boiler replacement services if the system is no longer performing efficiently.

According to guidance from the Energy Saving Trust, properly balanced heating systems help improve efficiency, reduce energy waste, and maintain consistent indoor comfort.

Do New Radiators Need Balancing?

Yes. Even after a new radiator installation, balancing radiators is essential.

New radiators can receive too much or too little hot water compared to existing radiators. Without proper balancing, this can lead to uneven heating, cold radiators upstairs, and reduced efficiency across the system.

Balancing should always follow radiator upgrades or replacements. If you are planning system improvements, see our professional boiler and heating services in Surrey for expert support.
